Similar to Cocobolo, another name for Granadillo is Mexican Rosewood. It is easier to work and glues much easier than Cocobolo. It is dense and straight with a closed grain structure. Although not a true Rosewood, the wood is commonly used by many in South America for instrument building under the name Macacauba (Platymiscium pinnatatum). Granadillo darkens to Rosewood colors. You may find some small checks that should easily turn away. These bottle stopper blanks have been air dried for a year, wax sealed, and may contain residual moisture as of November 2018. This is basically a bundle of small straws that are fibrous. Asian Black Palm is durable and hard with the black fibers densely packed together and surrounded by lighter colored less dense material. The end grain shows the black bundles crowded together like the end of a steel cable. There are not any growth rings visible in Palm wood. Our Asian Black Palm takes a fine polish and is commonly used for walking sticks, handles, picture frames, boxes and more. Our stock is air drying and contains residual moisture. Wax sealed ends are common. Unique color patterns, contrasting black with rich golden brown. It can be challenging to work with but amazing results are possible! Skill level: Intermediate.

In this yellowish-green colored species, figured logs are the rule but can be quite costly as they are usually cut into veneer. Uses for this fine timber include entire suites, furniture, brush backs, mirror backs, marine uses and many other projects. Interestingly, a large bridge with a single arch of 200' was also made from Ceylon Satinwood. The burning of the wood produces a fragrant, restful aroma that can induce a slumber in many and will kill Canaries. Today, Ceylon satinwood is a rare wood that is used for period reproduction furniture and is priced dearly, especially for figured stock. Air dried for two years and ready to use. An occasional piece may have some residual moisture.
