Gabon Ebony Turning Square (24" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2")
2.5 lb|24" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
INCLUDES 1 WOOD BLANK (several blanks are shown to indicate the range of color/grain to expect). Genuine Gabon Ebony is extremely rare and hard to find, especially in the dark color that we have available in this wood. Ebony takes a very high polish and turns well despite its density. It works, glues, and finishes well with some blunting on tools. This stock is clean, but may contain a minor imperfection. Color in this grade is black with occasional dark grey/black streaking. This wood is partially air dried, wax sealed, and contains residual moisture.
INCLUDES 1 WOOD BLANK (several blanks are shown to indicate the range of color/grain to expect). From equatorial Africa, Ebony is usually found in wet lowlands near rivers and swaps. Devoid of color, Ebony has ink black with lighter streaks. Only a small percentage of Ebony (three to five percent) produce the highest quality jet black color. Some of these pen blanks may have a slight hint of discoloration, but you will not find a darker ebony than this! Ebony is hard and costly to produce, which makes it a rare species to obtain. It is difficult to work, glues satisfactorily, and has a tendency to want to split, but takes a really nice polish that makes it worth the work. Skill level: Intermediate.
This high quality Ebony air dried in billets for over 10 years and was recently cut into lumber. The lumber is air dried to approximately 10-15% moisture. Gabon Ebony is highly sought after for its dark color. This is very high quality material with excellent color. A minor surface check, slightly rounded corner edge, or machete edge may be present. When working Ebony, seal all cuts immediately to prevent checking. Lumber may have wax sealed ends. Create something truly amazing with this rare African gem.
